Is the NBA Line Softer the Night Before? We Tested 2,000 Games
A common tip says to bet NBA underdogs the night before, while the line is still soft. We bought two full regular seasons of the night-before board at five US sportsbooks and compared it with the morning line and the closing line. The night board was not softer. Here is what the numbers showed.
The short version
We expected the night-before NBA board to be the softest number of the day. It was not. Across two regular seasons, an underdog moneyline bought the night before lost more than the same bet bought the next morning. The morning line was the best of the three boards we tested, and the closing line was the worst.
What we tested
We took the moneyline for every NBA regular-season game in 2024-25 and 2025-26 at three moments: around midnight Eastern the night before, the morning of the game, and the close just before tip-off. Prices came from five regulated US sportsbooks, and a game counted only when it had a moneyline at three or more of them at all three moments. That left 1,997 games. For each one we bet the underdog and scored the result two ways: at the median price across the books, and at the best single price on offer.
The results
At the median price, the underdog lost 8.3% of every dollar staked at night, 7.0% in the morning and 9.5% at the close. At the best price on offer the losses shrank to 5.5% at night, 4.5% in the morning and 6.1% at the close. The pattern held in both seasons: in 2024-25 the night board was 2.0 points worse than the morning, and in 2025-26 it was 0.5 points worse. We wrote down the test and the bar before we looked at a single result, and the night board needed to beat the morning by 2 points in both seasons. It went the other way.
What this means for when to bet
Timing alone did not turn a losing bet into a winning one. Backing every underdog lost money at every hour we tested, which is what you would expect from a market that prices teams well. What timing did change was how much you lose: the morning board beat the close by 2.8 points in 2024-25 and 2.3 points in 2025-26. If you already like an NBA side, the morning number has been the better time to take it than waiting for tip-off, and the night before has not been better than the morning.
Shopping matters more than the clock
The biggest gap in the table is not between hours but between the median price and the best price: 2.5 to 3.4 points, depending on the board. Taking the best number on offer saved more than any choice of when to bet. That is the simplest edge a bettor controls, and it costs nothing but a minute of comparing books.
What we will not claim
This is two seasons of one market in one league. It does not say the night board is never softer for a single game, and it does not say anything about spreads, totals or other sports, which we did not score for this test. We are publishing it because it was a fair test of a popular tip, and the tip did not hold up.
